Walkie-talkie Textures: Substance Painter

The Project

This project was all about creating textures for a simple walkie-talkie. I created 3 different variation based on different themes from other game franchises, such as Portal 2 and League of Legends.

 

The textures were all made within Adobe Substance Painter, using different techniques learned from previous project.

The Process

I started getting a concept of what a Portal 2 Aperture science walkie-talkie would look like, getting different references from the game's portal gun and environment. This got me thinking about the different Alphas I could add to the texture, including the different symbols for the buttons. I Also wanted to give the device an LCD like display, showing the individual pixels and scan lines. Since this was from Portal 2, the device needed to be dirty or look like it was left alone for a long time, adding different layers of grunge and dirt masks. This process was repeated for the different themes I created for the other variations.

Reflection

I am very happy with how these textures turned out, being some of my best texture work that I have done. I still have a lot to learn when it comes to the various techniques used in creating textures, something that I hope to learn over my career. 

I hope that I will continue to increase my texture skills leading into the future.
